A ball of light that spreads joy wherever she goes.
A kind soul, always with a word of encouragement for those in need.
A beautifully black and superbly self confident being who radiates realness and love.
Queens come in all shapes, sizes, personalities and temperaments.
Part of what makes Devren unique is her ability to transcend the labels handed out by society. Especially the ones reserved for brown girls.
These words often act as boxes, keeping in line those who see them as valid.
They are not.
Yet, too often we internalize these stamps as subconscious reminders.
They become like guardrails for identity.
Boundaries to our being.
But every once in awhile, an individual is able to break free and define their own path to self.
To exist on their own terms.
To fully embrace the ones who “get it”, and to silently love on the rest.
It’s like realizing one’s true value.
You refuse to take a penny less.
Only, the currency here… is love.
Which means you can give away as much as you can muster.
I’m not the most “likeable” person. (Trust, I’m working on it. )
And yet despite my occasionally* abrasive nature, I’ve never even once been rejected by this old friend.
A day one homie who saw the vision for We Are Human, way back when.
Someone who serves from a place of understanding and respect, and recognizes this universal truth as her guiding ideal.
Real love is undefeated.
And the fact is you tend to remember those who loved you, especially when you appeared to be unlovable.
Again, full disclosure – Devren was one of the few folks who’d make time to reach out in love, despite my tantrums.
She’s an individual who puts others before herself, and does so with a smile.
Yet of all the qualities I admire in Dev, one I value most is her equanimity. There’s a calmness of spirit I sense which permeates everything else.
A consistency in both peace and pursuit.
There’s an inherent goofiness’ too, be sure.
But even that craziness is coated in a thick layer of love.
A hard worker,
a loyal friend,
a daughter, a sister, a cousin,
a divinely inspired beacon of positivity,
and an overall dope human being.
One that I am personally grateful to know, and love.
You should get to know her, too.
